In first grade, students interpret and perform addition and subtraction up to 20, including addition of three whole numbers. Students represent their thinking with concrete objects, visual representations and algebraic equations and apply arithmetic to real-world scenarios described in word problems. Students apply the commutative property of addition to add numbers in any order and explore the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction.
